Patent Attorney



Dan’s technical capability is broad in having a background in Mechanical Engineering but in also holding a first class honours Masters degree in applied aerodynamics (specifically in applied software development conducted in conjunction with North Sails New Zealand) and a research based PhD in the field of aeronautical composite structures (research conducted in conjunction with Air New Zealand Engineering Ltd).

Dan is a registered Australian Patent and Trade Marks attorney and a registered New Zealand Patent Attorney who has worked at a number of top-tier firms since first starting his career back in late 2003. Since then, Dan has developed a diverse range of private practice experience in both the Australian and New Zealand commercial markets. Dan also has experience in professional engineering and design environments from working in the aerospace (New Zealand) and medical device (Ireland) industries.
Dan’s primary focus is in the general mechanical engineering space; however, he has assisted a wide range of clients (from sole inventors, start-up companies, through to large corporate clients) and drafted patent specifications and provided advice in areas ranging from designer clothes to mass spectrometry analysis equipment.

In addition to drafting patent specifications and conducting prosecution activities, Dan has extensive experience in undertaking opinion related activities for contentious matters including oppositions and providing support in patent litigation. Dan has also developed extensive experience in Australian design law from working with a major Australian clothing brand in pursuing design rights for its original styles.
